Ombudsman office initiated at SUSC Southern Utah State College student government has established an "Om-budsman"office "Om-budsman"office to improve campus communication and coordinate the problem solving process in the SUSC community. SUSC community. Mark Russell,' Rockford, I1L, ASSUSC Attorney General, has assumed the duties of campus Ombudsman with offices in the SUSC Student Center. Regarding his new assignment. Mr. Russell said, "Establishing the Ombudsman Office is a big step in closing the gap that often exists tietsveen students, student officers, faculty members, and administration." "The Ombudsman on many other campuses is a faculty member or administrator. We feel that it is to our advantage to have a student perform this function. "We hope students will let us know what concerns them. We have to be aware of a problem before it can be solved The office is a good channel for positive suggestions and ideas as well," Mr. Russell said. Mr. Russell requested that students with complaints or suggestions, or a nyone w islnng to be on the ombudsman staff should contact him in the student offices. He summarized the objectives of the new office as a service to: 1) assist the individual to define and solve the problem himself if possible, 2) provide information to students about college policy while at the same time accumulating ac-cumulating information for student government and ad-minstration ad-minstration officers concerning student feelings and attitudes, and 3) provide assistance in answering questions, solving problems, and implementing worthwhile suggestions to improve im-prove college life and communication com-munication at SUSC. The Ombudsman will serve as an ex officio member of the Trans-Campus Communications Council, the campus Holding Power Committee, and any other campus committee or group of interest to his office at the invitation in-vitation of the Dean of Students or Coordinator of Student Activities. Ac-tivities. Mr. Russell explained that, "It is just as much the Ombudsman's responsibility to communicate the feelings of the Administration as it is to defend the position of the students." "Ombudsman" is a Swedish word meaning "citizen's protector" which described an official who investigated complaints com-plaints and grievances of the citizeas. The first Ombudsman Office was established in Sweden in 1809 and the practice has spread to governments, business organization, and almost 100 university campuses across America. |
