Show Pros and Cons detailed in School Hoard's decision on Junior High site An extensive study and evaluation eval-uation of potential sites for the proposed new Cedar Junior High School Is being made, according ac-cording to Superintendent J. Clair Morris. A committee has evaluated three existing sites and a potential po-tential fourth site with results of the study reported to the Iron County School Board at their meeting last week. The pros and cons of each site have been outlined by the Superintendent and presented this week In the interest of the general public. The Board also Intends that a public meeting will be held at which time Input from those Interested will be accepted. The date of the hearing has not yet been set but notice will be given early In January, the Superintendent Indicated. LEIGH HILL BITE Pros 1. Adequate acreage and shape (40 acres) and stable base for construction. 2. Room for expansion. 3. Non-congested. 4. Aesthetically attractive. 5. Land very inexpensive (BLM approved school site). 6. Few safety hazards ex-cept ex-cept for winter hillside roads. 7. Natural environment for outdoor out-door education. 8. Construction would not Interfere Inter-fere with ongoing operation of school. Cong 1. No access to utilities (no sewer, water, power, or telephone). tele-phone). 2. No improved roads and sidewalks side-walks present. 3. Expensive site preparations. 4. Next to proposed sewer effluent ef-fluent reservoir. 5. Would be necessary to purchase pur-chase 5-10 buses and transport trans-port most of student body. 6. Not possible to locate swimming swim-ming pool with City. 7. Undesirable In terms of fuel crisis. 8. Poor accesg for most of the city. 9. Difficult for students and patrons to get to the campus lor extracurricular activities. EAST CAMPUS OF CEDAR HIGH SCHOOL Pros 1. Shape of land is generally rectangular. 2. Aesthetically attractive. 3. Most of land Is presently owned by Iron District. 4. It is possible to share playing play-ing fields, swimming pool, and auditorium. This is an economic savings. 5. General accessibility good except for north section of city. 6. Utilities available. 7. Minimum site preparation costs. 8. Roads and sidewalks available. avail-able. 9. Fair location for swimming pool. Cons 1. Little or no room for expansion expan-sion for either the Junior High or High School. 2. Soil base is poor for construction. con-struction. 3. Some safety hazards (close to US 91 and Cedar High School drivers). 4. Acreage is less than ideal (50 acres for both schools). 5. Too close to commercial de- fere with ongoing operation of school. Cons 1. Acreage is less than ideal (15.6 acres). 2. The land is "L" shaped. 3. The area contains hill which makes playing fields difficult diffi-cult to construct. 4. Site preparation costs would be large. 5. Access roads to most of city are not convenient and existing ex-isting roads are too narrow. 6. Land not owned by Iron District Dis-trict 7. Adjacent to 1-15 Freeway (noise and students wanting to cross freeway). 8. Expansion limited without additional land purchases. 9. Additional busing of students from east side of city. 10. One additional bus would need to be purchased. PRESENT CEDAR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SITE Prog 1. Shape Is rectangular. 2. Aesthetically attractive. 3. Land is presently owned by district. 4. Utilities readily available. 5. Most students can walk to school and, school activities. No additional bus tranpor-tation tranpor-tation required. 6. Good road accessibility. 7-Minimum site preparation costs. 8. Roads and sidewalks already present. 9. Desirable In terms of fuel crisis. 10. Desirable for joint city, school district swimming pool. 11. SUSC student helpers readily read-ily available (student teachers, teach-ers, observers, etc.) 12. People voted for the bond with the knowledge that it would be on the present site. ..j Cons ! 1. Acreage less than Ideal (16 i acres). ' 2. Soil is less than desirable j for construction. 3. Expansion limited without additional land purchases. 4. A few safety hazards present pre-sent with busy streets. 5. A little too close to commercial com-mercial establishments. 6. Too close to Southern Utah j State College. I 7. Dairy trucks parked on 300 I ; West (they are to be loaded on 200 West next summer). 8.
