Show isanieYor mm hoop title to be decided this week Adams State is well known for their home court prowess, too. The Indians, like Western New Mexico, have a 7-5 record, but are hoping to better the mark with their last two games, to propel them over WNMU and Fort Lewis College (7-5, also) for an untied claim to third place in the conference. Phil Belmore and Nelson Burrell with respective 21 and 15 point scoring averages lead ASC. The T-Birds are hoping to maintain a game of out-rebounding out-rebounding the Indians, and opening up the fast-break for guards Kohn Smith and Gary Crosby. Adams State is,, meanwhile, expected to throw a full-court press against the Thunderbirds. To win the SUSC cagers must above all keep their poise which in turn keeps their turnovers to a minimal. The T-Birds cinched second place and a berth in the NAIA District 7 playoffs last weekend. Two wins this weekend could only better their record and their ability to play under pressure. It's up to two schools completely com-pletely out of the RMAC running to decide who the number one and two teams in the conference will be. The potential "spoilers" are Adams State and Western New Mexico, who don't figure in the race themselves, but can put a halt in the designs of the top two rated Utah teams. Southern Utah State College and Westminster play both these teams on the road this weekend and if Westminster stumbles a couple of wins for SUSC could somewhat ease the embarrassment of the Thun-! Thun-! derbird's two conference losses to the Parsons. The T-Birds travel to Alamosa, Colorado and Silver City, New Mexico this week, two awesome teams when, playing on their home courts. Both teams have lost at home this season, but both have the ability and talent to , capture a big one, too. Western New Mexico was in the RMAC race until last weekend when they dropped two games. The Mustangs have an abundancy of talent that doesn't reflect their 7-5 record. Center Dennis Kawolski, who didn't play in SUSC's home victory over Western New Mexico, leads Mustang scoring with a 17.3 clip. Forward Irnie Signars follows with a 15.4 average. Signars is also second in the conference in rebounding with 15.7 boards per game. WNMU runs a patient offense that often causes teams to make errors and fouls in trying to get the ba 11 . The slow-down offense is run by 5-5 guard Joe Mondragon who keeps spreading the offense farther and farther until a WNM player can slip past a sleepy defender for two points. |
