SUSC, along with 13 other teams, will compete in Division II of the tournament. The T-Birds are the only non-California team in the tournament. Action will get underway Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the finals Saturday night at 7 p.m. Claremont, Southern California College, Biola College and SUSC appear to be the contenders for the title. The T-Birds had a long road trip through Colorado last week. They dropped three matches and drew in another. Adams State whipped the 'Birds: Western State won, 38-4, and Northern Arizona eked to a victory, 24-21. SUSC battled Fort Lewis to an 18-18 18-18 tie. Dave McKee (142) was the only winner against Adams State, and Craig Rollo (118) was the only victor at Western State. In the NAU match it was heartbreak city again for the 'Birds against the Lumberjacks. Joe Taylor (134) won by a decision and McKee got a pin to put the 'Birds even with NAU. But then the Thunderbirds lost the next four matches to give NAU the win. Dan Humphrey (190) and Jim Callison (HWT) both got pins, but they came too late. In the Fort Lewis match Rollo (118) started it off with the fastest T-Bird pin of the year; he pinned Tom Cordova in just 41 seconds. Joe Taylor (134), Jeff Winn (150), Wayne Ritter (158), and Humphrey (190) all won by decisions for SUSC, While McKee (142) and Phil Price (167) both lost on questionable calls by the official. Craig Rollo (118), a freshman from Cedar City, was named Wrestler of the Week for the week by Coach Joe Lopour and assistant Jim Bayly. Rollo won two matches on the trip through WRESTLER OF WEEK. Rollo has a record of 5-6 and leads the team in five of nine statistical categories. "He started the season at 126 pounds but has since gone down to 118 where he has done a fine job," Lopour said. |
