Show CHS look for State Championship j It's off to the State 3A Track and Field meet for the Cedar High School Redmen and what might just turn out to be the first state championship cham-pionship in 3A for the Redmen. Coach Jack Bishop and his crew of thinclads will challenge for the title in a meet to be hosted Saturday by Weber State College in Ogderu Toughest competition is expected to be from Jordan and Davis High School. "If we perform up to our capabilities we could bring back a state crown," Coach Bishop stated. "Our productivity in first places will have to offset the points of third, fourths, and fifth places expected to be generated by those schools who have generated more entrants," Coach Bishop stated. Much of the success of the Redmen will hinge on the performance of outstanding junior sprinter Brad Jackson. Jackson will be entered in the 100,220 and 440 yard dashes and will be a key figure on the mile relay team. All could possibly be first place efforts. In addition Richard Adams is ranked as the favorite in the two mile event. Other potential first place finishes could come from Vance Matheson in the hurdles; Joe Wells in the shot put or javelin and Kendell Webster in the long jump. "It will all have to come together just right, but we could pull it off," Coach Bishop commented. Thursday and Friday the Redmen entered the Region Five track and field meet for the purpose of additional qualification for the state meet. At that event Jay Esplin, finished third and qulaified in the 440 yard dash. He qualified in both placement and time with a 51.9 clocking. In addition the medly relay team finished third in the meet and qualified for tate. Members of the team are Jimmy Reese, Neil Giles, Jay Esplin and Kendell Webster. At that meet the Redmen picked up seven first places, but were not included in the point or placement - only for qualifying purposes. In that meet Jackson took first place in all three of his events-the 100,220 and 440 yard dashes. Adams took first place in the two-mile, Vance Matheson picked up first place in the high hurdles; Joe Wells captured the shot put and Kendell Webster was first in the long jump. Others who placed in the meet included the Medley relay team, third. Vance Matheson third in the 100 yard dash and Esplin third in the 440. Steve Hunter placed third in the 880 yard run; Matheson had a second in the intermediate hurdles; Nathan Johnson had a fourth in the long jump and Mike Graf finished fifth in the high jump. The mile relay team placed second. Members are Jackson, Matheson, Esplin and Hunter. |
