Southern Utah State College will shortly have its fourth player since 1970 sign a free agent contract with a National Football League team. Leonard Walterscheid, who has been named to all-Rocky all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams for two years-both on offense (as a wide receiver) and defense (as a defensive back)--has announced his intention to sign a contract with the Chicago Bears of the NFL. Walterschied, a 6-0, 180 pound native of Moab, is scheduled to report to the Bears' rookie camp next week at Chicago. He was contacted by Sid Gillman, Bears' personnel director, this week immediately after the NFL's annual player draft. A year ago SUSC quarterback quar-terback Jerry Dyer signed a contract with the Los Angeles Rams. Earlier, defensive tackle Frank LaRussa signed with the New York Giants and Doug Berry signed with the San Francisco 49ers. "Each year, through correspondence, questionnairs, personal visits to practices and through scouts watching games and films, teams from the NFL have pretty well assessed the talent here at Southern Utah State." Tom Kingsford. head coach for SUSC, said "I'm sure they look at other college division schools very carefully too." |
