Show High Fire Danger on Dixie Forest Land Managers are concerned about the high fire danger on the Dixie National Forest, aggravated by the drought. George Fry, Branch Chief of Fire Management indicated that the fuels four inches in diameter and larger are as dry now as they usually experience in late August. Fry indicated concern by fire control people over the high hazard caused by dry fuels and increased in-creased risk by the influx of fishermen on opening day, coupled with large ' numbers of people who are cutting firewood. "We have been asked many times," Fry said, "when the Forests were going to be closed to users. We can't put a date on the closure right now, but if we get a rash of man-caused fires or the fire danger breaks into 'Extreme' for a several day period, we will have to initiate a closure." |
