The Junior Sheriff's Patrol, a concept that helps young people identify with the law rather than against the law, has been in operation in Iron, County for several years under the direction of Sheriff Schoppmann. Schopp-mann. As far as can be determined it is the only Junior Sheriff's Patrol in existence in the country. Over the years over 200 youth have participated in the program and it has a special meaning for each. "It is surprising how sharp these young people are when it comes to the law and as we discuss the general conduct of people in the Junior Sheriff Meeting," Schoppmann Schopp-mann commented. These young people respond to the law and report at the meeting of the many violations that they witness from time to time and indicate that their membership in the Junior Sheriff's Patrol has kept them from breaking the law. At the outing held recently members of the Patrol were picked up and taken to Wood's Ranch for the special outing. Between the Sheriff and Patrol members four snowmobiles were available and most of the time was spent riding and enjoying snowmobiling. In addition to the snowmobiles tubes were on hand and if they weren't being pulled behind a snowmobile they were flying down the hill on the tubes. The event was topped with hamburgers and one of the members when asked if he liked the Sheriff's cooking he responded with a firm "yup", and he sure knows how to make fun." Currently the Junior Patrol has approximately 50 active members. Any youth interested in participating in the program may. do so by |
