Show Veterans will not receive tax abatement notice Many veterans will be disappointed dis-appointed wlu-n they do not receive a tax Abatement statement this year from the Veterans Administration, stated sta-ted Mr. Elmer J. Smith, Director Direc-tor of the Regional Office in Salt Lake City. Veterans tax exemption, or tax abatement statements, will be released early in January to service-connected service-connected veterans rated at least 25 percent disabled, and to World War I, nonservice-connected nonservice-connected veterans who are in receipt of benefits will not receive re-ceive a statement. In prior years, the VA issued is-sued to nonservice-connected veterans a tax abatement statement for WWII, as well as WWI veterans. The Utah legislature changed the law in 1971. Hereafter, VA cannot issue statements to other than WWI veterans receiving "non-service-connected pension and to their widows. Other non-s non-s e rvice-connected veterans, who are protected by the new law and who had established eligibility prior to enactment of the law, will not receive a notice from the VA. The change affects only those who were not receiving a tax abatement last year. Last May, the county commissioners com-missioners in each county, in Utah, were informed of the new procedure the VA will follow this year. Mr. Smith expressed his certainty that county officials now have a complete roster of all those protected by the new law, and stated that veterans who do not receive VA tax abatement statements should contact county officials to see if they are protected. |
