Show Two men, snowbound on Cedar mountain rescued after frigid overnight ordeal How would you like to be snow bound on Cedar Mountain Moun-tain overnight with temperatures tempera-tures ranging to about 20 below be-low zero; dressed in only moderately mod-erately warm clothing, housed in a shed with no doors and windows and one sleeping bag for two people. That's what happened to Ronald Nelson and Tom Leigh of Cedar City Sunday evening when their two snowmobiles developed mechanical problems prob-lems and they were forced to remain overnight.. Early Monday morning a search for the two men w;as undertaken by the Iron County Coun-ty Sheriff's office and with the cooperation of the Color Country Snowmobile organization. organiz-ation. At about noon Monday the pair were located and returned to Cedar City. Although they suffered no major damage, both men were extremely cold, and both had gotten into the sleeping bag to ward off the cold. The two men left Cedar City at about noon Sunday. They left on their snowmobiles in the area of Right Hand Canyon Can-yon and were found Monday near Miners Peak, approximately approxi-mately 20 miles away. The two had headed for property owned own-ed by the Richard Leigh family fam-ily and it was on that property proper-ty that the pair picked up the sleeping bag, which, as it turned out, apparently prevented pre-vented them from freezing to death, according to Sheriff Ira Schoppmann. When found the rescue party had to take their own clothing and give to the men, build a fire and warm them up before they could bring them out. "Their pants were so stiff you could break them like icicles," Sheriff Schoppmann Schopp-mann commented. Apparently one of the two snowmobile units that they were using quit on them and the other failed to operate sufficiently that they could pull both of them to their starting point. |
