The facility will set on the corner of Main and 200 North Streets. New motel complex underway A $1 million dollar Motel-Restaurant Motel-Restaurant complex to be located lo-cated at the corner of Main Street and 200 North in Cedar City got underway Wednes-day Wednes-day with groundbreaking ceremonies cere-monies held at the site. Construction of the facility, facili-ty, located where the former Escalanto Hotel stood, is being be-ing handled by Porter-Carter Corporation, an organization formulated by owner of the property and the franchise rights from the Ramada Inn. Principals of the corporation corpora-tion are Larin Porter and Jack and Calvin Carter. Construction Con-struction will be under the tion of the Carter Bros. Construction Con-struction Co. and when completed com-pleted will be managed by Mr. Porter. With construction beginning this week a completion date of April 1, 1972 has been set by the organization in anticipation anticipa-tion of the travel season next year. Architect for the 'facility is John Rowley of Cedar City. The structure will be of ma-sonary ma-sonary and conceite and is completely fireproof. The Ramada Inn will have 60 units incorporated into the original construction with the building designed so that additional ad-ditional units can be added up t0 100. Twenty of the units are of a common corridor type with the additional 40 units accessible from outside entrances. The complex will be two stories high and the major units will be built along the south side of the property. Frontage to Main Street has been designed for parking utilization of the restaurant facilities as well as adding to the beauty of the community. Planters will be placed along the front of the building and the south section has been recessed from tile sidewalk to allow for additional planting to add to the beauty of the facility. A covered cntranceway will divide the Ramada Inn from the restaurant complex. The Restaurant is designed to accommodate ac-commodate up to 200 people and will feature off modern facilities including banquet accommodations. Financial arrangements for the complex have been handled handl-ed by State Bank of Southern Utah. The former Hotel El Esca-lante, Esca-lante, which served as a hub for all of southern Utah for many years, was purchased by Cedar City Corporation from Union Pacific Railroad. When the facility became outdated out-dated the Cedar City Council put the property up fop sale and it was purchased by a group of Cedar City businessmen business-men including Mr. Porter in January, 1970. In the spring of 1970 the Hotel was demolished to make room for the new facilities, but delays in acquisition of franchise and a change in ownership to complete the formulation of the Porter-Carter Corporation necessitated a delay in constitution. Total investment on the project includes the acquisition acquisi-tion of the property, construction construc-tion of the facilities .plus the furnishing of the units and the restaurant. |
