Show Family reunions draws many to Parowan As proof of the fact that the reunion season is upon us and that Parowan is still the "Mother Town" of much of the western area, family gatherings gath-erings are on now in full swing. Two families gathered in Parowan two weeks ago and two more were on the agenda last week end. The family of the late Mr. Thornton and Mrs. William U. Thornton assembled here and at the Five Mile on Friday for a three day gathering, and the descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hollingshead were assembled as-sembled at the Five Mile and at other places in the Parowan Mountains on Saturday and Sunday. All but one of the surviving children of the Thorntons, with scores of their posterity, gathered from many places to camp, at the Five Mile, with the, . event f eatuning t an- all-day all-day assemblage there, including includ-ing a family dinner and business bus-iness meeting. Games in town on the park late in the afternoon after-noon was followed by a camp fire program back at the canyon can-yon camp on Saturday. And many of the family remained re-mained here for a church service ser-vice and testimony meeting at the camp Sunday morn: lng" before returning to their homes. Mrs. Neta Thornton Wells and Merrill Thornton are the only members of the original Thornton family living in Parowan, and they were joined join-ed by Mrs. Nancy Thornton White, St. George; Mrs. Harriet Har-riet Thornton Hicks, Mrs. Sylvia Syl-via Thornton Trelease, Mrs. Clara Thornton Allen and Byron Thornton, all Las Vegas Mrs. Afton Thornton Werner and Mrs. Afton Thornton, Werner, Yellowstone Park. Not here was William E. (Billie) Thornton. Hollingshead A group of about 150 members mem-bers of the Hollinshead family fam-ily from Utah and surrounding states met at the Bowery area at Vermilion Castle on Saturday, Satur-day, July 10 to hold their annual an-nual reunion it is announced by Mrs. Ila Lowe Bauer, member mem-ber of the family. The reunion was to honor their Parowan Pioneer leader, Nelson Stoyel Hollingshead. The group enjoyed a full day of entertainment and visiting vis-iting which began with registration regis-tration at 7:30 a. m., followed follow-ed by a breakfast of ham and eggs, hotcakes, etc at 8. When this was over those assembled played softball, volleyball and various other games. At 10 the group gathered around the circle for a lively program, of group singing, stories, and songs, including duets, and solos with guitar accompaniment. This program was interrupted later by a barbecued beef dinner with all the trimmings, and served to all present. All food for the clay was furnished by the Hollingshead Hol-lingshead Family organization officers. On hand for the gathering were members of the family from Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Ne-vada, Tennessee, Wyoming,, Colorado, Montana and various vari-ous part of Utah.. They represented repre-sented six of the original families, fam-ilies, who were Louise H. HCap, Emily H. Crrcney; Joseph, Jos-eph, John, Stephen, Andrew Abraham Hollingshead families. famil-ies. New officers were elected to carry on the organization, to be headed by Leo Hollingshead, Hollings-head, Michael Hollingshead, vice president; and Ralph Hollingshead Hol-lingshead on the Elizabeth Evans Line, and Ha L. Bauer, on the Mehetable Thornton line. Reunion dates were set for the Saturday preceding July 21 each year. |
