SUS students receive scholarships for language study in Germany Four Southern Utah State College students have received re-ceived scholarships to spend four months in Germany in intensive study of the language lan-guage and other subjects. Joyce Gardner, Richfield; Ted Whitaker, Salt Lake City; Vernon Davenport, Harbor City, Calif., and Carl Banks, ' Parowan, were chosen on the baois of scholastic ability and interest in the German language. lan-guage. I Miss Gardner, Mr. Whitaker, and Mr. Davenport will travel trav-el to Philadelphia, Pa., to depart de-part August 9 with other scholarship winners for the Goethe Institute in Lublar, i Germany. Mr. Banks will be unable to utilize the grant due to his military draft status. stat-us. A total of 150 students from the United States will make the trip. The participating students will spend eight weeks at the Goethe Institute for language study after which they will tour Germany for three weeks. The final phase of the program pro-gram involves having the students stu-dents live with German families fam-ilies while studying at Gorman Gor-man universities for five weeks. The grants of $1000 for each student are provided through the Carl Schurz Foundation Foun-dation and the Volkswagen Corporation. The students are also required to furnish $L000. |
