Show Iron County School District Plays Important Part in Economy of Area This is the fourth in a series of articles submitted through the Iron County School District office. The purpose of these weekly articles is to Inform the public and school patrons of the operation and condition of the school system. Too often, the public does not understand the complexities of the schools and yet it is the one institution which -vitally affects the entire population. popula-tion. Any inquiries relative to these articles are invited and every effort will be made to supply sup-ply satisfactory information to interested persons. SCHOOLS AND THE LOCAL ECONOMY The Iron County School District Dis-trict Is one of the largest employers employ-ers within the county. Over 220 employees are directly involved in providing the educational scr-, viices necessary to provide ed cation, Kindergarten through 12th grade for over 3200 students. By estimating the populatiorWot Iron County at 10,000, this wouM mean that over 2 of the countf1 population is employed by the district and approximately 34 of the county population is involved in-volved in daily participation in the schools either as a student or an employee. To provide employment and necessary educational services for over one-third of the population popu-lation of the county requires capital cap-ital investments in buildings, sites, equipment, etc., in excess of $S,000,(XX) and a yearly payroll pay-roll of $1,200,000. This payroll is spent primarily in the county by the employees. In addition to this expenditure is the expenditure expendi-ture for supplies, maintenance items, equipment, buildings, etc. when prices and quality are com- parable, local merchants or agents supply needed items and add to the ecoonmy of the county- As with every such institution, schools are the responsibility of the citizens. The Iron County Schools, besides being a responsibility, respon-sibility, are an asset to the county. coun-ty. They are an asset in providing provid-ing the highest type of education educa-tion to the boys and girls and excellent facilities for community communi-ty use and support in community communi-ty activities; an asset in bringing into the community excellent community members and citizens; citi-zens; an economic asset by paying pay-ing a substantial payroll, and added employment opportunities. |
