Show Twenty-Nine Cedar City Boy Scouts Complete, Hike from North to South Rim Grand Canyon Twenty-nine scouts and four leaders returned this week end from the Grand Canyon. It is the second successive year that Troop 347 of the Cedar Seventh Se-venth Ward has made the excursion ex-cursion and is one of the most popular outings of the year for tlie active scout troop. Adult leadership was provided by Scoutmaster Morris A. Shirts, Orwin Green, York Jones and Karl Church. The 29 scouts included in-cluded Donald Betensen, Robert Braithwaite, Randy Bunnell, Paul Challis, Ryan Chamberlain, Mace Church, Richard Cox, Gail Cripps, Pat Dover, Russell Dover, Garth Green, Evan Jones, Merrill Jones, Mario Lambeth, Mike Leavitt, Kim Matheson, Larry Naegle, Lennie Olofson, Alan Olsen, Dennis Den-nis Rowley, Randy Shirts, Carl Swanson, Kenyon Thompson, Mike Thompson, Gordon Top- ham, Danny Webster, Tracy Williams Wil-liams and Danny Yergensen. I Accompanying the group to Grand Canyon, but not making the hike was another troop number, num-ber, Alan Croft. The scouts began their trek into Grand Canyon on Memorial I Day. They carried provisions and other necessities for the three-day three-day hike on their backs. The first day was spent threading , their way down the precipitous cliffs on the North Rim. The second day was highlighted highlight-ed by a refreshing swim In the swimming pool at the Phantom Ranch in the bottom of the canyon can-yon in 100 degree heat. The I Colorado river, now a small clear stream as a result of the backing up behind Glen Canyon Dam, offered another opportunity for I relaxation and swimming. The second night was spent at ! the Indian Gardens camp ground under the South rim of the canyon. can-yon. . . .so named for the Indian farms that once existed near the cool water springs which now supplies water to the Lodge on the South Rim. The third day was spent making the last final assault on the South Rim. . .a torturous four mile hike. The group emerged from the South Rim at 11:15 Saturday morning June 1st after hiking a total of 25 miles. Here they met their transportation and returned to the North Rim, 214 car miles away. They had no accidents, nor injuries and everyone completed com-pleted the trip without mishap. |
