Show Robert Gardner, 91, Utah Pioneer, Dies of Injuries : iy ' . xr V k 17 1 Robert Berry Gardner, 91, pioneer pio-neer southern Utah rancher and prominent Cedar City resident, died in the Iron county hospital last Thursday at 10 p. m. of injuries in-juries sustained in a pedestrian-automobile pedestrian-automobile accident Investigating Investigat-ing officers reported that the accident ac-cident occurred two and a half hours earlier when Mr. Gardner was crossing the intersection of 200 North and 300 West streets He was hit by a car driven by Douglas Peterson, 27, Cedar City, according to Police Chief Otto Fife. The car driven by Mr. Peterson, Pet-erson, going west, had just passed pass-ed an eastbound vehicle when Mr. Gardner stepped Into the path of his car. Peterson was traveling about 20 miles per hour when the accident occurred, officers of-ficers said. After the accident, Mr. Gardner Gard-ner told the officers that there were so many cars traveling through the Intersection that he was not sure which way to go. Shock, concussion and probable Internal injuries caused death hospital attendants said. According to Arthur Nelson, llron County sheriff, Investigating Investigat-ing officers found the accident unavoidable. Funeral services were held on Sunday at 2:30 p. m. In the Third ward chapel with Bishop Elihu Whatcott presiding. I The prayer was by Parley E. 'Anderson, and remarks were gi; ven by Bishop Whatcott. Speakers Speak-ers were B. Glen Kenney, Mrs. Llnna Snow and William R. Palmer. Pal-mer. Benediction was by E. S. Gardner, and dedication of the grave by Sam B. Jones. Music was furnished by the Third ward choir, and a duet composed of Elaine Southwick and Herschel Neeley, accompanied accompan-ied by Mrs. Virginia Larson. Mrs. Ada Gardner was at the organ. (Continued on Back Page) Robert Gardner (Continued from Page one) A prominent cattleman and farmer of southern Utah, Mr. Gardner was born In Mill Creek, now a part of Salt Lake Lake City, December 20, 1857, a son of Robert and Cynthia Berry Gardner. Gard-ner. He came with his family to southern Utah with the Dioneers who settled Dixie in 1863. He settled set-tled in Pine Valley, Washington county, until moving to Cedar City in 1915. On March 8, 1883, Mr. Gardner married Bernella Snow in the St. George L D S temple, Mr. and Mrs. Gardner celebrated their sixty-sixth wedding anniversary this month. , At Pine Valley he served as postmaster for 30 years, and for many years was Sunday School superintendent. A farmer and livestock raiser, Mr. Gardner served in the bishopric of the Cedar Third ward, Church of Jesus Je-sus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 12 years. Survivors are his widow of Cedar Ce-dar City, five daughters and two sons: Miss Mamie Gardner, Mrs. Thelma Ashdown, and Mrs. Bernella Ber-nella Jones, Arthur Gardner and Fernleigh Gardner, Cedar City; Mrs. Jessie Whitehead and Mrs. LaRee Porter, SL George. Other survivors are 27 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; two half brothers and four half sisters, sis-ters, Nat Gardner, Cedar City; Angus Gardner, Lehl; Mrs. Alice Snow, St. George; Mrs. Annie McDonald, Mc-Donald, Kanab; Mrs. Maud Baker, Bak-er, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Rho-da Rho-da Harrison, Lovell, Wyoming. |
