Show Avenue Opened After Forty Years A Cedar City project, started forty years ago. was completed th's week, when an avenue throueh the block between First and Second East and Center and First North streets was opened up. In 1902, Henry W. Lunt, who during dur-ing his lifetime served In many official of-ficial capacities in Cedar City and the State, contributed the land needed to open the avenue hallf way through the block, but difficulties arose in securing the land needed to complete the project, and the av-enue av-enue remained opened only half way through the block until last week. Now, Emil Roundy has matched Mr. Lunt's contribution and the avenue is ready for use. As a result the project was finally completed without cost to the city. At the last meeting of the City Council the avenue was officially named "MacArthur", but only arter a bit of good natured political rivalry ri-valry among the counctlmen. The Democratic Councllmen suggested the avenue be named "Roosevelt", but Republican Mayor H. H. Lunt. backed by Republican Councilman Myo F. Higbet, thought "Winkle" "Win-kle" would be better. However, "Mac Arthur" was decided upon, which will probably be a more popular name anyway. |
