Show By Ted Kesthig The life of a boy illustrates human hu-man existence. The boy who has not developped a tendancy to hunt and shoot by the time he Is twelve years old probably never will become be-come a shooting man. That Is no indication of depravity, but only that his greatest pleasure In life will come from some other source. I For the benefit of parents: the boy who Is fond of shooting doesn't handicap himself particularly In any profession. MaJ. Chas. Askins, authority on arms and their use, advises that 'to lessen recklessness and Instill care, new shooters need education and experience. It Is best for the boy getting his early training on game to go hunting with his father. The I "old mm" won't hesitate to tellf i him when he Is careless, when he is pointing his piece about promls-croLsly, promls-croLsly, when he is using It as a club, or when he is carrying it In a pesition to endanger others. j The lad who has never .had an i ccl'.ent never lets his gun go off atd'entally, whether It hurt any-nc any-nc or not. is cither wise or lucky or to h perhaps. Recklessness can be knocked out of us by experience only, and If It is our own experience we generally pay for It. The tendency of every boy Is to form a g.uig or be attached to a gang. When he rocs hunting the gang goes. The bigger the crowd .he greater the danger, but that s rarely const :e.cd. In a group of 'half dozen lads, four might be well ! tai:ght at.d perfectly safe wtth a gun, but the other two will find It necessary nec-essary to show off. These are the dangerous boys. Nobody will complain com-plain about them, for a boy has a great dread of being thought afra'd of anything whatsoever. If a bullet went through the hell of his boot, so that his mother might not see it when she went to help pull his boot off, he'd plug that hole up wltii ut-mostmost ut-mostmost care and never say a word about it. I It takes time to teach us that a gun Is deadly, and not to be handled like any other tool whatsoever. All this kind of education Is modern and unlike the hunting Instinct, we have inherited no instinctive care in the , handling of a gun. I |
