Too long have the people of this state permitted Individuals to sacrifice sac-rifice personal Interests to serve in the legislature Ht a payment that ls much below the level received by the average common laborer In this modem age. It Is a salary scale that has long since been nowhere near on a level with the base of cost of living for those who go to the state capitol city to serve as law makers. In some circles tliere lias prevailed pre-vailed the Incorrect Idea that this loy payment to the legislators has been of economic value to the state. That this is Incorrect will be admitted admit-ted by those who have given the subject considered thought. Undoubtedly Un-doubtedly the prevailing opinion throughout the state is that there should be an Increase in pay for those who make our laws, It ls an opinion supported from every angle by facts that cannot be refuted. Utah needs to march forward in its governmental operations to parallel par-allel its advance in the economic field. One of the Important steps In this march forward Ls proper payment for the men and women who make our laws and that proper prop-er pay can be based only on a scale In line with the service which they, as lawmakers, are expected to render. |
