Show Poviqv Company Plans To Build New Steam t Generating Plant Here W. P. B. Approves $300,000 Project . t A steam generating plant or 2503 Kilowatt capacity and costing ap-prox'mately ap-prox'mately $300,003 will fcs built here by the Southern Utah Power Coinpanj , It was announced Tuesday. Tues-day. The announcement was made upon receipt of approval for the project by the War Production Board. The construction of the plant hnd been authorized by the company Board of Directors subject sub-ject to WPB approval. WPB approval for the cj.istruc-tlon cj.istruc-tlon of the plant w.is granted primarily pri-marily because of the need for additional ad-ditional rower for mining and crushing Iron ore at Iron Mountain west of Cedar City. Because thu huge new Geneva Steel plant and Columbia Steel Plant at Ironton are wholely dependent on iron ore from Iron Mountain and large tonnage ton-nage of ore la being shipped to Colorado( the War Production Board granted the priority requested by the company. The Southern Utah Power Company Com-pany furnishes all power for the operations at Iron Mountain of the Columbia Iron Mining company and Uie tpAh Construction comipany. Tlie mines are completly electrified and use very large amounts of powtr for operation of the electric shovels, crushing plants, air compressors, com-pressors, churn drills, loading equipment, equip-ment, etc. More electric energy Is used at Iron Mountain than at any other location on the power company com-pany system. Including Cedar City, and the power demands will increase in-crease as ore consumption Increases at the northern Utah steel plants. The power company has purchased purchas-ed a plant site ln Cedar canyon approximately one mile from Cedar Ce-dar City and near the lower COC flood control dam. Preliminary construction con-struction work will begin at the plant site In the near future, It was announced by Reld II. Gardner, President and Manager of the Southern Utah Power Company. Orders will be placed for the necessary ne-cessary equipment as rapidly as possible and the equipment will be Installed as soon as received. The plant Is designed to use coal from local mines In Cedar canyon and on Kanarra mountain, Mr. Gardner stated. When the plant la in operation approximately 50 tons of coal will be used each day. It U the plan of the company, Mr. Gardner said, to purchase Its coal during the summer months when consumer demands for coal from Uie mines Ls not great, and whew the generating plant will be used to full capacity. The new plant will be the largest power plant in Utah south of Provo, and will be modern ln every re-sjiert. re-sjiert. It 111 be of si nplc design, having a minimum of duplicate facilities. Tlie local coal will bo fed into the boiler by a spreader type stok-cr. stok-cr. This stoker kicks the coal Into th boiler ond most of the fuel burns while In the air, the balance burning burn-ing on a gruto similar to most furnace grates. The boiur makes steam at 7.i0 dgrces F. total tcm-peratur tcm-peratur and at 450 jxiunds per square inch pressure. The steam goes from the boiler to u turbine which Is driven at 3000 revolutions 'per minuet. The turbine Is directly connected to a 2500 Kllowat generator gener-ator which transforms the mechanical me-chanical energy of the turbine Into In-to rlectrlcal energy. Aftir passing through the turbine, the spt-nt sU'.im toes to o eondnn.sor where it Is cooled sufficiently to change It back In.o water which Is then puni)ed Imck Into the boiler for re-use. All tin? water used In the boiler will l dlMllled by an evaporator eva-porator ln Die plant from city) water. The small amount of make up water will come from the city culinary svstem. To cool the steam In the con-denser, con-denser, water will be diverted from Coal Creek through the condenser and back Into th stream by grav-. lty. tContlnucd on Bock Tagejs Power Company Plans New Steam Generating Plant (Continued From Front Paget The generator will generate electricity elec-tricity at 4160 volts which will be transmitted at that voltage to Cedar Ce-dar City and distributed throughout through-out the city. As electricity is used at 115 volts for liyhtuig purposes and by most appliances, and at 230 volts for water heating and cook-I cook-I ing, It Is necessary to reduce ths I voltage at various locations through, out the city from 4160 volts to 115 and 230 voltts. I The electrical energy not used , la Cedar City will go to lnrt;e trans. formers where the voltage will be increased from 41G0 volts to 24,500 volts for transmission to the iron mines and to the users outside of Cedar City. It Is necessary to increase in-crease the voltage to this amount to keep ldsscs at a minlaitrn. At the iron nunes. the voltage will be reduced from 34.50;) volts to various voltages ranging from 2400 to 115 volts and used in the various equipment equip-ment at the mines. |
