Show ( NEWS From The CITY OFFICE Citizens of the cjnuimnity have no doubt observed during the past few days that the painting crew of the Slate Road Comr'ssion has be n painting the various parking signs on Main street. May we call to your attention, the markings at an angle on the curb, which ar vO help the motorists park their cars at thi correct angle apd in the proper places. Conforming to these markings will help gr.atly with the local parking problem. Many citizens havi been Inquiring Inquir-ing wiiy all the old pedestrian lane have not b.en repainted. The reason lor this is that th city ofilcials have been In conference with Harry S. Wright, Safety Engineer En-gineer of the State Road Commission, Commis-sion, who maintains with considi-frable considi-frable conviction that Cedar Cit has had too many crossing', So many in fact, that Mr. Wrlgm h of the opinion that motorists woulo. be confused with people crossing in so many places, and conclude thai there are no legalized pedestrian lanes, and therefore no motorist responsibility. Attention of the motorist Is called call-ed to the fact that wh n he is driving a car on Main street and comes to a newly painted pedestrian pedes-trian lane h is legally responsibte for the safety of any person in the lane. He must come to a stop, and must drive at a speed that will make it possible for him to stop at the lanes if necessary. The city o flcials wish to Impress upon all motorists that when they are driving on Mln street, they have legal rfsponsibilitles involv-lng involv-lng the safety of pedestrians at the semaphores and at the newly painted pndestrion lanes at Washington Wash-ington and Harding Avenues. The pedstrlan also has a definite responsibility. When crossing Main street thy must do so at designated designat-ed places. "Jay Walkers" have no legal protection. It may take a few extra steps, but it Is the only way the pedestrian can be safe. A City Traffic Ordinance also provides that cars must be parked eighteen inches from the curb, allowing al-lowing room for the street department depart-ment to clean the gutter. It Is hoped that a line will soon be paint d to help motorist park at the proper pro-per distance, and to remind them of the regulation. Citizens' cooperation In helping to maintain the various traffic ordinances will be appreciated. In a democracy citiens have the obligation obliga-tion to conform with accepted nues and regulations. Enforcement officers of-ficers cannot be at ev:ry spot at all times, nor can he devote too much time to the enforcement of minor regulations. |
