A revolution in union labor organization is being frequently predicted but it may be a long time coming true. As an aftermath of the Reuther-Thomas Reuther-Thomas contest for control among the auto workers, reports have sprung ""HJSJST"! up that Walter Reu- I ther (CIO) is hob- 'i sj ' nobbing with Dave fmit V Dublnsky (AFL) ft, A with a view to F;(3v,Ji bringing the auto "rEr workers into the 1.. J ! AFL. A co-related '"''jl rumor has John 0 ' J Lewis, the puffing J mine boss, taking Thomas hold of AFL with his dominating character, shunting William Green aside, in anticipation anticipa-tion of developing one big union in AFL and trimming the CIO. The facts involved In the report it 1 T. are more apparent man rem. ncu-r:ilmXi:rm ncu-r:ilmXi:rm ther 18 " socialist. I ys 1 " 's tru enou8n ne I f won what might be I r I superficial "con- if ' tro1" of the UAW Yt Ijf in the recent con- I f nvfp vention but It is a I ' Ji I control so definitely PALJ S United he cannot k"' exercise It much. X He won the presl- d e n c y, ousting Reuther Thomas, but the fo r c e s behind Thomas packed the executive committee com-mittee against Reuther by a margin, mar-gin, which my superior sources inside in-side labor calculate at 13 to 0. In the Thomas mojorlty are labor politicians poli-ticians who run the gamut from conservatism to communism and do not for a moment doubt the presence pres-ence of the communists. UNION MEMBERS OPPOSED COMMUNISTIC PROGRAM Their obnoxious practices for Thomas at the convention, caused Reuther's election. Most UAW delegates dele-gates did not care much about ousting oust-ing Thomas, at least a plain majority major-ity did not until the communists became be-came so active in behalf of Thomas. The commies made it easier for Reuther to get the presidency, because be-cause the majority in the union has a particular distaste for its own communist element when, in specific spe-cific cases, like this one, it can see plainly what they are doing, although al-though in cases outside the union, involving domestic and international internation-al affairs the majority is frequently misled by its communist minority. But Lewis, since his return to the AFL executive committee, has not been doing any-I any-I thing about this or other labor revolu- ly." llon rnatter- ln b'-lttt deed, he has made i V, llr Green, or to assert I J his bulk, or any v"4 move whatsoever. K ' ' v Lewla U not so-claiist so-claiist Dublnsky, Yfl like Reuther, Is, al- though this fact is Lewis little known. (Most labor people count Dubinsky as a Republican In view of his strong po-litical po-litical resistance to CIO and the communists.) Lewis Is a free enterprise en-terprise man who believes the greater the profits, the greater the wage. The best la- XrTX bor authorities . j ' j doubt that he will :IL ' LJ try to fold his mas- jg ' V 1 sive wing over the i. Jp Reuther Dublnsky jiVc f hobnobbers. Indeed B Jl? ' if the Thomas fac- ry2 " ' ' i tion of UAW could fl . 1 purge Itself of the communists, it Duliinsky minht expect to do morn business with Lewis than the Reuther-Dubinsky faction granting that Lewis dues assert himself In AFL when his coal strike is over and other amusements to occupy his time, are Inckintf. The Inner lineup of union poll-ties poll-ties Is such, therefore, that split in CIO Is likely, and half of It or more may eventually go to AIL, hut rrrtalnly not the communist part, and possibly not the socialist wingers. Also not the Hillman part. Here tho split runs wider and deeper. ; Sidney Hillman is a socialist, but ! of somewhat tho French kind which is currently playing ball with the communists on political Issues facing fac-ing the nation and world. CIO President Phillip Murray Is actually being faced with an inner revolt by these leftist groups. Late-' Late-' ly Hiilman has been very quiet, run-ning run-ning his political action groups, and letting Murray handle the strike I campaigns, which. Incidentally, have I done little to increase his prestige. I Murray is a former protege of Lewis, who brought him up, and a Catholic. Vnu can see plainly then that hl-pnlitics hl-pnlitics of the unions Is loading Itself up with dynamite or expii-sive expii-sive atomic energy but no one car. yet guess In which direction. |
