Show WorltWefl Underway On Airport Project Work was started Friday by the Gibbons and Reed Construction Company on the construction contract con-tract at the Cedar City airpo. I and Is progressing so rapidly that it Is expected that the Job will be completed before the contract time limit ls reached. The contract calls for the completion of the construction construc-tion work in 120 days, but company officials are of the opinion that the work will be completed in about 100 days, unless bad weather holds up work. The contract, which totals a little lit-tle over $108,000, is for the construction con-struction of two runways, a large apron and several taxi strips. Each of the runways will be graded for a width of 500 feet, with n isn.fn.it. wide strip of asphalt paving on each. The paving on the north-south runway run-way will be 5500 feet long and that of the east-west runway 5200 feet. The grading extends a couple of hundred feet farther than the paving pav-ing on each runway. In addition to the runway construction, con-struction, the contractors must move the present hangar to a new location, approximately 800 fee;, southwest of where it ls located. However, the caretaker's cottage will not be moved since its locatio.i does not interfer with the development develop-ment program. A silo located north of the airport must be moved, as well as several other obstacles near the field Ed. Howard, resident enginee:-, states that work on the lighting contract cannot be started until the construction contract is completed. The Vance Electric Company of Salt Lake City, holds the Hunt in contract which totals approximately approximate-ly $35,000. Under this contract two rows of lights will be installed a-round a-round the border of each runway. The landing lights, which are surface sur-face type, line the edge of the paved pav-ed part of the runway, while a row of cone type lights will border the graded runway. In addition, light towers, wind velocity, and celling Indicators, control stations, etc, will be constructed under this contract. con-tract. A radio beacon is to be placed at a ixilnt on the hills south of the Lund highway, some distance from the airport, but this is not included In the lighting contract. Administration buildings at the field must be provided by the City, while diversion canals to carry Irrigation Ir-rigation water around the field to farms in the valley must be provided pro-vided by the city and county. The County equipment Is now In use on the Job, and the canals should be completed by the time the high water Irrigation season starts. The main canal project ls for a distance of about one mile, with the canal to be 12 feet in width at the bottom. There has been rumors that the War Department planned to order or-der the length of the runways of the local field to be extended from 52 and 55 hundred feet to 7200 feet, in order that a squadron of bombers bomb-ers might be located here, but no ollicial announcement has been made on the matter as yet. If the order Is received it is expected that tin! construction work would be milled to the Gibbons and Reed contract, con-tract, rather than call for new bids. |
