Show Seven Counties Represented At Local FBI School Jay C. Newman, Special Agent In Charge of the Salt Luke City Of-f.ce Of-f.ce of the Federal Bureau of Investigation In-vestigation opened a Civilian Defense De-fense School for polite of seven southern counties here Monday. Courses of instruction are continuing continu-ing daily at the El Escalante Hotel under the direction of K. R. Schroe-der, Schroe-der, FBI Inspector. Officers from Beaver, Iron, Millard and Sanpete counties were in attendance at thf opening day sessions, and all of the counties In the district have been represented. Mr. Newman pointed out in his opening remarks that under a directive di-rective of President Roosevelt In 1939, the Federal Bureau of Investigation In-vestigation was selected to be responsible res-ponsible for coordinating and handling hand-ling all law enforcement activities In connection with national defense de-fense matters. He stated that the Office of Civilian Defense had designated des-ignated the FBI as the official jwlice training agency. He emphasized tlv.it in over 250 cities and town in the United States similar Instruction to police had been or was being given. Instructor Schroeder in the opening open-ing lectures of the school, outlined in detail the set-up of the Civilian Defense organizations and pointed out the observations and studies made by the FBI officials in England Eng-land during a survey in 1940 and 1941. He said that it was important for police officers to know all the duties that would be imposed upon them under wartime emeruenrv. English films depicting air raids in England and the method of combating com-bating emergency situations created by enemy bombers were shown. In pointing out the necessity of strictly guarding industrial plants and public utilities against the acts of saboteurs and the espionage a-gent, a-gent, Schroeder emphasized that great care must be exercised In the selection of personnel and that surveys sur-veys should be made of vital industries in-dustries and utilities so that they may be properly safeguarded. Special Agent George L. Carroll attached to the FBI office in Salt Lake City is assisting Mr. Schroeder Schroed-er during the course of the training. train-ing. Local officers in attendance at the school included Sheriff S. C. Lamb, Claude Macfarlane, Chief of Police Arthur Nelson; Officers El-Roy El-Roy Webster and Preston Wood of the Cedar City Police Department.
