Show , PRACTICAL RECLAMATION WORK BY THE A. COLLEGE Pumping Plants Offer Cheap Way to Irrigate, Investigation Shows. The irrigation and drainage department de-partment of the Utah Experiment Station under the direction of Pro- ' fessor O. W. Israelson, cooperating with the Division of Irrigation of the i United States Department of Agri- j culture has a well-bortng outfit operating op-erating near Cedar City with a view ' of testing different methods of digging dig-ging wells and of installing and operating oper-ating pumps. This outfit is composed of one combination boring and drilling drill-ing machine, and n test pump. The maximum bore of the drilling ma-; chine is twenty-four inchen. Those in charge of this experimental project , plan to keep th'e pumping machine in one place long enough to determine the possibilities of the locality in j iue.st.ion, it will then lie moved to1 some other place. In this way a sur-1 vey of the districts suited to this me-j thod of obtaining irrigation water will be made. There are muny sections sec-tions of Utah that are too dry for successful farming without irrigation and where water cannot be economic- ; ully brought to the land through the 1 medium of annals and reservoirs. It j is in just such regions that the pumping pump-ing investigations will be especially i valuable. Mr. C. G. Haskell, Irrigation En- , gineer, representing the U. S. De- , partment of Agriculture, is in charge of the work. The plans of those in churge of , the work are to determine carefully the economical possibilites of the pumping method of irrigation and to establish pumping stations where ; they are the most needed. This will necessitate a careful survey of the tat mid it is imperative that a line le drawn curefully between the sections sec-tions where the method will upply and where it will not be possible. The ( Experiment Station will purchase more pumping and boring machines as ntd arises and it is not unreasonable unreason-able to look forward to the day when many of these plants will be in oper-t oper-t n throughout the state. This method me-thod of irrigation is one of the dependable de-pendable ways of reclaiming arid lands in Western States, and it is meeting with much approval in Utah. U. A. C. News Letter. |
