Show H m wiiaiii ini mi ma, ii i i i ii i i .i i nwiim n . i i i i i i i i i i. m Miscarriage of Justice m The jury in tho caso of Claud Allen, one of the H gang of outlaws which murdered the judge, and H sheriff, and wounded tho clerk of the circuit court M at Hillsville, Va., was unablo to reach an ngree- M ment and was discharged. m Instead of so much talk about tho courts, it would be well to do a littlo talking about the jur-H jur-H ics which try criminal cases. In view of tho ovi-Hj ovi-Hj denco in theNcaao of Claud Allen, it is difficult to M understand how any twolvo reasonable men, con-H con-H oCiontious in their desiro to render justico, could H fail to arrive at a verdict. B But this is but one instance of many whero H tho jury, in tho faco of strong evidence, acquits H tho dofendant and brings to naught all the efforts of tho officials to punish tho guilty. With this H diroliction of duty by juries goes another, tho at- tempt to ovado jury duty by tho best citizons. If tho law-abiding citizen is not willing to sit in judgment when tho laws have been violated, ho H should nover complain because tho guilty are not punished; ho is moro to blamo than tho officials whoso duty Jt is to approhond offenders.
