Show 1 - -" II I Ml '. ! 1 ' -- - DIXIE FRUIT CREATES SENSATION There was a sen3ation in today's to-day's produce markets in the shape of the first through consignment con-signment of fresh fruit for regular regu-lar market purposes in this city from the Dixie country; and the success of the venture was such as to give reasonable hopes that this experimental shipment will prove the first of regular and permanent shipments from the far south into these northern markets, President Frank Barber of the Dixie Fruit & Produce company, ' and a grower at Hurricane, 20 ' miles east of St. George, Washington Wash-ington county, arrived this morning morn-ing with 22 crates of peaches and apples, fresh from the trees in his country. The consignment consign-ment was hauled by covered wagon 60 miles to Lund, after a two days' trip, with one night in the express car, the whole being landed here in excellent condition; condi-tion; or as Mr. Barber says, as good as though shipped all the way in refrigerator cars. The shipment was taken to the Growers' Grow-ers' excharge where the peaches were quickly sold at $2 to $2.50 1 per crate, and the apples at $1.50 per box. Mr. Barber is justly enthusiastic enthusias-tic over the success of the experiment. exper-iment. He said this afternoon: "We had no idea just how this thing would turn out, but con-' con-' eluded it was worth trying, with I the expectation that if it was successful to continue the trade thus opened. We would like to get into this market, and compete com-pete with the southern California Califor-nia trade; and the result of this trip is so marked by success that Jtve-jaccnosa ..continuing,. -Of-course, 60 miles to the railroad is a long wagon haul; but if we can establish business connections connec-tions 'here, and can get our fruit here in good condition, and it is evident we can, there is no reason reas-on why the traffic should not increase in-crease steadily, until wo give the southern California growers a run for their money. I shall return re-turn to Washington county very hopeful of the future, and in a very good f ame of mind. We look for great things to follow this first fruit shipment into the Salt Lake market. If we only had a railroad dwn into Washington Wash-ington county, southern California Califor-nia would not compete with us very long." Deseret News. |
