Show "CRAP SHOOTING" GETS BIG BOOST Society Advocates Its Substitution for Dancing ; Would Greet by "Rattling Tccir Bones." The following questionable composition compo-sition wns handed in by one of our subscribers who felt that it had a local lo-cal application.. Wo offer it for what it is worth: Should the skillful shooting of the merry bones, the rolling of the six-faced six-faced ivories become n pnrt of tho higher curricula of the country's great educational centers 7 Thero have been different opinions expressed on the supject. Following is n dissertation dis-sertation on tills momentous question by Rnlf E. Spnngler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Spongier, of Salt Lake City, which appeared recently in Tho Daily Maroon, of tho University of Chicago, where the younger Spnngler is now a student. Ho writes: Our favorite contributor reports that n movement is on foot nmong a group of enthusiastic undergrnds to establish a course in crnpshooting nt the University of Chicago. Ho submits sub-mits the following account, including a speech, which ho took down short-hnnded, short-hnnded, ns you might say, from the lips of a prominent mnn-nbout-campus who was so modest as to wish his name withheld: i "Craps," ho stated, "is one of the most ancient nnd honorable pastimes. It originated .among the Africans nnd tins thus since the beginning been a gentleman's game. No one need lower himself to piny craps." In rcsponso to a storm of protest, tho speaker explained that he referred to mental lowering, nnd not physical Ho resumed: "Craps is fundamentally a democratic demo-cratic game, and as such is worthy of support from tho University of Chicago, Chica-go, which is notorious for its Jcffer-soninn Jcffer-soninn tendencies. The gamo of craps was the mainstay, both at home nnd abroad of America's fighting nrmy. At the roll of dice, or the rallying cry of 'Come, you 'leven,' the cx-scrvice cx-scrvice men will gather again to the support of the game. "I appeal to the students to join nnd support the Society for tho Promulgation Pro-mulgation of Crapshooting, which is to bo orgnnized today. As soon as the organization is effected a committee will be elected to cnll upon members of the faculty who have not recently lost nt the game. Our tentative pro.. gram is to start a popular demand for n courso in craps in tho physical culture department, prefernbly under the able tut6rnge of tho athletic instructor. in-structor. "There nro u number of reasons why this movement should find favor in tho oyes of the faculty. The game gives an impetus to the study of 'other departments. For example, nil the elements ele-ments of economics are graphically portrayed to the crapshooter risk, speculation, supply nnd demand, and particularly the law of diminishing returns. The game tenches philosophy philos-ophy as well as does the learned professor pro-fessor of this subject, with the added value of practical experience. Every player knows tho necessity of studying study-ing tho tcrrnin for hillocks and valleys hence the study of physiography will receive nn impetus ns a secondnry course. "Invaluable instruction will bo received re-ceived in modern American-English ns she it spoke, adding milch to the color nnd effectiveness of the plnycr's diction. "The originators of the idea will not selfishly limit the pleasure of the game to their own sex. Members will insti-uct their best girls in the nrt, and wo expect to soon hear from the woman's dormitory the stendy drone of the dice nnd tho enticing feminine plea, 'Baby needs a new pair of shoes, co-o-me, yo' seven.' "As n socinl pastime, may I predict that crapshooting will in timo take the place, in a lnrgc degree of dancing. In the nenr future I confidently expect ex-pect to see lnrge ballrooms filled with coed students, gnthorcd in cheery com-araderie com-araderie around a number of crap games, oblivious to tho strains of the jnzz orchestra." Method of organization of tho society so-ciety and its meeting will, for tho time being bo kept secret among tho chnrter members. An active, but sur-ropitiou.f sur-ropitiou.f campaign has been started for now membors, known ns "customers." "custo-mers." Instead of using tho customary handshnke of fellowship, members of the socibty will greet each other by rattling their bones, |
