Show Rafts Protect River Banks. One of the latest developments In river bank protection Is that of flexible flexi-ble rafts anchored In position but freo ' to give with the rise and fall of tho ' water which Is now being tried on tho east bank of the, Missouri river near Folsom, la. The rafts ,nro built of logs and are not only strong nnd durable, but exceedingly ex-ceedingly flexible In every direction. The handling of the rafts was simplified simpli-fied by building them on barges which wero towed to the location desired, where the rnfts were made fast by cables running from the centers and Joints to nnchor piles, each pile holding hold-ing two sections nnd tho barges pulled out from under 'them, old boiler flues threaded on light cables being used ns rollers. Reinforced concrete plies wero used for nnchors. It Is expected that theso rafts will tnko the place I or at least lender more permnnent I tho far more expensive Installations I of mattresses, strong dykes and other forms of revetments. |
