Show FINANCING NEW HOTEL I Massmceting Called By Club Au- I thorities, Appointment I of Committee WILL SELL STOCK TO PROVIDE NEEDED CASH Matter of Taking Liberty Bonds at Par Excites Lively Discussion. Discus-sion. Labor for Stock is also Considered. At a mass meeting of Cedar Citizens Citi-zens held in the library auditorium last night, called by the commercial club to consider ways and means of getting the work going again on the new hotel, President Mace of the commercial com-mercial club put the subject before the meeting and asked R. L. Jones, club secretary, to read some of the communications being sent in that showed the need of haste in finishing the building. The first were letters of enquiry from other states to the Salt Lake Commercial Club, which had been for- warded to this club. A note from the Salt Lake club secretary said great numbers of the same sort were coming com-ing in all the time. The next was a pamphlet put out by the city of Norfolk, Nor-folk, South Dakota, that city, finding itself in need of just such n hotel as Cedar City is trying to build, and being be-ing similarly situated in the matter of getting one built, had put out the phamphlet urging Norfolk citizens to subscribe stock in the hotel sufficient suf-ficient to build it. The arguments for the Norfolk hotel as put forth in th pamphlet fit the situation in Cedar City, with the added forco of Cedar's possession of great natural attractions. ' nearby that Norfolk does not possess. A digest of these arguments will appear ap-pear in the Record. Mr. Jones also told the audienco that the Lund station agent, who has been chosen by the Salt Lake Route especially for his unusual ability as F a tourist handler and publicity man, , had written for information as to - when the hotel would be completed, j how many rooms, how many with bath, etc. -I The Salt Lake commercial club officials of-ficials had informed the secretary of this club that if they could have as- K' surance that the new hotel would be ' completed in time they fould route seven or eight parties of 150 to 200 tourists each through Cedar this com- ing summer. Contractor George A. Wood, who has the contract for building tho new 1 hotel, was then called on for the figures showing about how much nc- ' tual cash is needed to complete the building. From his figures if was deduced that thirty thousand dollars cash, with fifteen thousand dollars in local labor, would complete it ready ' for the plaster and plaster at least part of it. From secretary Jones it was learned , that as soon ns the building come h within fifty thousand dollars of being finished tho Bankers' Trust Company stood ready to loan enough on it to complete it. So that the thirty thous- and dollars in cash would assure its j completion. Further questioning k brought out the fact that cash in hand f amounting to about four thousand dol- lars to pay debts and six thousand f to buy cement, and other materials K would allow work to resume on the walls of the liotel. Tho financing of a payroll amounting to around ?8,000 ' a month would also be necessary in U order to keep tho walls growing. The I only labor which could not bo found hero was that of skilled bricklaying. It was estimated that $4,000 cash would pay for that part of tho work. Tho matter of cold weather work was brought up, and tho contractor said the best concrete was laid in cold weather, where it was not allowed to freoze. He also argued in favor of making use of available labor in the 1 'i f K winter months, and made note of the fact that the building and trades journals all are advocating the practice prac-tice of building in tho winter months. It was moved and seconded and passed unanimously that the chair should appoint a committee of ten to assist the hotel board in soliciting stock sales for the hotel, and that next week bo set apart ns Hotel Week, and a drive bo made for tho needed funds for going on. The matter, of advising the Hotel Board to instruct the stock sellers to accept liberty bonds at par was debated de-bated on, but was left to tho Board. Tl.3 matter of accepting half cash and halt' labor on stock subscriptions was discussed and finally left to the committee com-mittee and board. Chairman Mace deferred appointment appoint-ment of the committee to this morning. morn-ing. Notico was given out that there would bo a Grand Leapyear Ball and Barn B-ance next Monday evening under un-der tho auspices of tho Commercial Club, and that there would be a big barrel on tap, nothing being specified as to tho content thereof. Another notico was given that the Commercial Club had challenged tho American Legion for a rabbit hunt next Tuesday. Tho losers are to pay for tho amunition and for a danco, It is also probable that they will have to see to tho preparation and marketing of the rabbits. Meeting adjourned. |
