Show Diocese of Denver, THE DENVER LETTER. Rev. J. B. PitaVal left Denver on Tuesday evening for Santa Fe, where he will be consecrated auxiliary bishop on July 25. While in this city, Father Pitaval was the guest of Bishop Matz, to whose diocese he has belonged for' twenty years. The priests of Colorado regret very much to lose one who has ! labored for so many years among them, but are rejoiced in the honor that has been conferred upon him. John Baptist Pitaval was born in France in 3 858. .He was educated in the diocese of Lyons, where he was afterward ordained sub-deacon.- In IS81. when Bishop Machebeuf returned to France with such wonderful tales of missionary life in the west, he so inflamed in-flamed the heart of the young student that he resolved to forsake all that he held dear in the home of his childLood and follow the saintly bishop to the new field. His plan did not meet with the approval of his parents, who thought the new world fraught with untold peril, and who besought their boy to remain at home. In order to escape their vigilance, young Pitaval remained hidden in Paris for manv weeks before taking passage for America. Amer-ica. The party landed in this country in June, 1SS1, and immediately repaired to St. Charles college, near Baltimore. Here Father Pitaval was ordained deacon dea-con by Cardinal Gibbons. In December of 1SS4 he was raised to the dignity of the priesthood, at Loutto academy. He was first assigned to the San Luis valley, where he remained for nine years. In 1S90 he was transferred to Aspen, where he remained until March of this year. Durango was his next field of labor, and it was from this Place that he was chosen to be Archbishop Arch-bishop Bouregarde's assistant at Santa Fe. Father Pitaval is eminently fitted for the exalted position to which he has been chosen. His excellent education, his polished manner, his long experience expe-rience in church work, his splendid physique combine to make him the man perfectly suited to assume the episcopal episco-pal dignity. . While being duly appreciative" of the honor that has been conferred upon him. Father Pitaval regrets very much to have the diocese where his prisetly career has thus far been spent.
