Show 0 e zi 0 1 ' ' i ? - ; I - Lenten Regulations I Diocese of Salt Cake ' ; ; 1 l At all the masses on next Sunday, the following I regulations for Lent wi:l be published: Next Sunday ; will be Quinquagesima Sunday, and the Wednesday (, ' following will be the first day of Lent, Ash Wednes- (j I 5 " 1. All the days of Lent except Sundays are fast (! days of obligation. w 2. - All persons under 21 years or over 60 years of age, those, who are engaged in . hard labor, the sick (, g and convalescent and those who cannot fast without ( injury to their health, are exempt from the obliga- ( (?) tion of fasting. ; ! 3. All 'bound to keep the fast shall make but one full meal a day, except oft Sundays. 4. The meal permitted on fast days should be I taken about noon. . 5. A collation is permitted in . the evening. ' . 6. . When the principal meal cannot convenienti v be taken about noon, the order, may be inverted, so fi im) that the collation may be taken about noon and the (5) . dinner in the .evening. . . 7. General usage has made it lawful to take in ' Mie morning a cup of coffee, tea or chocolate, with a small piece of bread. ' , S. Necessity, and custom have authorized the g use of lard instead of butter in the preparation of all permitted foods. ' , Q 9. By dispensation the use of flesh meats is per- 0 mitted at all meals on Sundays and once a day-at the principal meal on Monday's, Tuesdays,. Thursdays and ! Saturdays, with the exception of Ember Saturday and the last Saturday of Lent. 10. .Persons exempt from the . obligation of - fast- ing may partake of flesH meat at all meals on days when Jhe use of meat is permitted at . the principal 0 meal. . . - 0 11. Flesh meat and fish are not to be used at the same meal during Lent, even on Sundays. ft' 12- The use of butter, cheese, milk and eggs is permitted every day in Lent. 13. By virtue of an Indult granted by the Holy See March 15, 1S95, workingmen and their families are allowed the use of flesh meat once a day on all fast 0 and abstinence days throughout,. the year, with the exception of all Fridays, Ash Wednesday, the Wednesday and Saturday of Holy Week and the Vigil of Christmas. Those who are exempt from the ob- $ ligation of fasting are permitted to use meat more ' than once a day on all days except those before men- tioned, namely, Fridays, Ash Wednesday, the Wednesday and Saturday , of Holy Week and the i 5 VlS of Christmas. .Those who avail themselves of this Indu'.t are not permitted to use flesh meat and ) flsh a the same meal, and arte earnestly exhorted to perform some other act of mortification, such as ab- 5 stinence from intoxiwatoj liquors. ! 14. The Paschal time extends from the firsti Sun- V day of Lent until Trinity Sunday, inclusive, during tj ' which time all Catholics-who have attained the prop r i) er age are bound to receive Holy Communion worth- D uy. To afford the faithful opportunities of gaining i) the graces of the Lenten season, it is hereby ordered 5 . that in addition to the usual Sunday devotions, Len-' ' j ten exercises be held on two evenings of each week in j all the churches of the diocese to which are attached j resident pastors. On one of the eyenjngs an instruc- D tion is to be given, on the other, "the Stations of the ) Cross and permission is hereby given for the Bene- ) diction of the Blessed Sacrament on both evenings. ? ) On Good Friday the Devotion of the Way of the Cross ) shall be given in all parish churches in the evening:. ) L.
