Show Mining Stock Investments. Butte,. Mont., June 7, 1902. Intermountain Catholic: I have read in your paper an account of the flourishing flour-ishing condition of Salt Lake City, and the safety of the investment of money there. From the suggestions, made by you, it would seem that you are still a back number .In this progressive age. I .have known more money made out of a small capital in mining stocks in one month, .than, could be realized in years by the slow process you suggest. It was only by courage and grit that our rich men, who directed their attention atten-tion to mining enterprises, became wealthy. Would you discourage such brave,' enterprising men, who have made fortunes , by delving .into the bosom of mother earth? AN OLD MINER. 0O, The Intermountain Catholic does not discourage legitimate mining. On the contrary, we have' every admiration for the "brave, enterprising men who have made fortunes by delving delv-ing into the bosom of mother earth." We admire also' those who work patiently pa-tiently for years and never realize anything. any-thing. They are entitled to just as much credit a3 the men who are lucky enough to strike it rich. Their bravery is shown in the fact that only about onev in a thousand does strike it rich. In the article referred to, we merely pointed out the folly and danger of trying to make money by buying stocks on the exchange,' which are put up to fancy prices, and unloaded on the pub lic, jr'eopie wno ao mat are not enii-. tied to any credit -whatever. They are merely trying, to get something for nothing, and that kind of traffic does not help legitimate mining a particle. On the contrary, it hurts it. For the benefit of our correspondent, we submit a list "of stocks, showing prices three years ago and prices now. The figures ar'e taken from actual quo- tations of the Salt Lake Mining and Stock Exchange. The losses shown are startling. Who lost this money? Surely Sure-ly not the nimble promoters and organizers organ-izers of "the companies? It was the parties Avho bought the stocks, and who were expecting to. double their money in a short . time. " boes not this bear out what we have said? ( V-, The following ; table shows money lost in mining stocks during the last three years. Figures are from official - report of transactions oii the Salt Lake Mining and Stock Ex-cLunge. Ex-cLunge. The first column shows the amount bid for the stocks May 20, 1899, the second column shows the amount bid for the same stocks May 29, 1902. The third column shows the net loss. Who lost the money?
