Show ST. MARY'S ACADEMY. Mrs. Baker's Readings and "Everyman" "Every-man" Attended by the Pupils. That reading is to literature what Playing is to music, was effectually demonstrated by Mrs. Bertha Kunz Baker in her recitals of last week in Barratt hall. And how many lines of culture must combine to the making of a perfect reader was also strikingly employed in Mrs. Baker's performance, for not by all the consummate excellences excel-lences of speech alone did she captivate capti-vate her listeners, but even as much by those things that speak to the eye. Who that saw her can forget that wonderful won-derful play of the light of thought and sentiment across her splendid features? Happy the author who finds such a reader; still happier thobe who hear the classics of our language so exquisitely exquis-itely discoursed! The children's hour was attended by a large number of pupils, and it was deeply regretted that more cculd net avail themselves of the entire course. The Legends of the Holy Grail, given giv-en the previous Saturday, was a grand introduction to the Arthurian region which the class in English literature had just entered upon a few days before: be-fore: while The Gospel of Joy. the last matinee, was a forcible lesson on sanity san-ity cf taste in preferring the hopeful and cheerful in our reading, and the wisdom of eschewing all that is morbid or melancholy. Moreover, it is gratifying gratify-ing to observe how the subjects, of these two recitals were decidedly Cath olic in maner and in treatment, recalling recall-ing to our minds an oft-heard statement, state-ment, that though English literature is pervaded by an atmosphere opposed to our faith, yet the fact remains that many of the best and sweetest things of non-Catholic poets are wholly Catholic Cath-olic in spirit and in effect.' Diverse as were the criticisms circulated cir-culated about the play "Everyman," the members of St. Mary's theatre party par-ty who attended the matinee performance perform-ance of Saturday were unanimous in their enthusiastic approval. Possibly the adverse comments are traceable to a lack of familiarity with the ideas and practices portrayed in the play; and if so, the convent girl had here a decided advantage over her more worldly-wise sister. Besides, "Everyman" afforded those studying the history of the drama a perfect example of the old morality plays, and their effectiveness in bringing bring-ing home to the heaYts of men the all-important all-important truths too seldom pondered.
