Show SUICIDE OF A PROMINENT CITIZEN W. A. Nelden. prominent in the business busi-ness and social circles of this city, suicided sui-cided on Thursday of this week by s'tooting himself through the head. He left no explanation for his rash act. but it is believed that he was moyed to destroy 'lis lift by reason of ill-health, ill-health, having long be-n a suflerer from an impaired constitution, as a consequence of overwork. Deceased was, at the time of his death, president of the city board of education, ami during his active business busi-ness care? i" has held many positions of prominence in this city. If there wore more Christian fortitude forti-tude exercised when pain and sorrow rack body and brain suicide, with all its distressing consequences, would be of much bss frequent occurrence. To be sure. n some cases of this character, charac-ter, there is an entire absence of moral responsibility because reason has been destroyed, but it is safe to assume that in an overwhelming majority of instances in-stances of self-destruction the underlying under-lying cause is the want of a living faith in the Supreme Being. 'to whom men are responsible for their lives. Verily. "The fear of th? Lord is the Leginning of wisdom." An abiding faith; in the truths of religion is the only antidote for this growing evil: many a man, lacking this faith, has, impulsively, in the moment of despondency, despon-dency, destroyed body and soul when, had he been d?t erred by the wisdom which is inspired by a fear of God. he might have lived to complete a useful and happy career, the prospect of which was momentarily obscured by pain and adversity. |
