Show The spirit that would repress change, that ridicules all dress, manner, speech, and action, that is -different from the customary type, and aims at nothing so much as uniformity in looks, thoughs, utterance and conduct, is the enemy of civilization, of progress, prog-ress, of true welfare. Certainly there are many new Things proposed which are not in the interest of improvement; but we may modestly doubt of our infallible in-fallible discrimination concerning these, and at least allow them to put themselves to the test. We may trust the good sense and conservatism of our community not to embrace what is foolish or absurd, pr to take backward steps, even if we do not take upon ourselves our-selves to crush down whatever seems new or strange. |
