Show THE FOOLISH WIFE. Samuel Gompers, at the National Civic Federation's Federa-tion's annual banquet in New York, last month, spoke strongly against the proposed reduction of wages throughout the country. "To reduce wages," said Mr. Gompers, "will not relieve the situation, but make it worse; for a reduction re-duction of wages' means a reduction of consuming power." Mr. Gompers paused and smiled. "They who propose relief through wage redaction redac-tion remind me of he wife of a young blacksmith, of Washington," he said. '"Did you sew that button on my coat,' this blacksmith asked his wife one morning. " 'No, dear,' the wife answered. 'I couldn't f iud the button, but I sewed up the buttonhole, so it's all right.' " |
