Show BIRTHPLACE OF THE AMERICAN FLAG. (John Quincy Adams, in Frank. Leslie's Popular Monthly for July.) In the rush of progress that has marked the waning years of the century cen-tury the American people have been, to a large degree, unmindful of the ravages that time is. working on the few historic, relics .that vomain to tell j I I " " of the founders and early patriots of j our republic. The most conspicuous ; building that was being threatened ; with demeolition was the birthplace of j the Amerieean Hag, 339 Arch street, Philadelphia. Pa. ! This humble edifice is no longer in danger of passing into oblivion, but is now assured ot being perpetuated at the shrine of American patriotism. It is to be perpetuated as a Federal possession, pos-session, and with Independence, Carpenter's Car-penter's ar.d Faneuil Halls, will remain as a .tribute of the patriots of today to those of the Revolution, and an object ob-ject lesson to the generations to' follow. fol-low. That the purchase of the birthplace birth-place of Old Glory and the erection of a suitable national memeorial to Betsy Ross might be effected in a manner to redound to the lasting glory of the people as a whole, the American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association Asso-ciation was founded. It was incorporated incorpor-ated under the laws of the State of Pennsylvania, Dec. 19, 189S. This association. . through the issuance issu-ance of membership certificates at the uniform price of 10 cents, invites the co-operation of the people of the entire country in the consummation of its objects. ob-jects. The result of the first year's work, which shows that a fund of $13,-231 $13,-231 was secured toward the fulfillment of these objects, demonstrates the wisdom wis-dom of the association in adopting a plan that makes possible popular participation. par-ticipation. The possibility of arrogating arrogat-ing the glory of saving the "Old Flag House" to a few men by means of large individual contributions has been obviated. The pennies of the people are doing the work of saving to the nation this sacred home where the American flag had its birth. |
