Show LAYING THE CORNER STONE OF THE NEW CATHEDRAL. On Sunday, July 22, the cornerstone of the Cathedral will be laid with all the ceremonies and solemn pomp of the Ritual. It will be a day of great joy for the Bishop, clergy and laity of the diocese of Salt Lake. The material edifice now in ' course of erection, will be, when completed, one of the finest, though not the largest, west of the Missouri. Mis-souri. It will be a fitting compliment to the spiritual edifice which Bishop Scanlan has for the past twenty years, by his example of self-denial and good works, erected in the hearts of the people. Its two steeples towering high, and pointing heavenward, will be a standing invitation to all to enter, since that is their home, whilst the crosses which surmount these steeples, will proclaim the crown that awaits all, and that there is no glory equal to that of the cross. Whilst churches in architectural designs de-signs and plans differ, certain general forms are uniformly preserved, namely, the porch, the nave, and the sanctuary, being modeled on the tabernacle and temple of the old dispensation. At the door of the former was a laver of water, where the priests washed. At the entrance to Solomon's temple was a brazen urn filled with water, where the priests bathed to purify puri-fy themselves for the ministry. These Iwere but figures of Christian baptism, prescribed by the rubrics, to take place at the entrance to the church. Water i Piessea ny ine pruyeib ui liik i-iiurtii . will also be found inside the door of every Catholic church. It is a con-1 tinuation of an acient custom among the Jews. The ceremonw of laying the cornerstone corner-stone recalls the spiritual rock which St. Taul Faid Christ was, "and the rock was Christ" (1st Cor. x, 4), for unless un-less He had been ever present with His ! church, she could not, taking into consideration con-sideration human frailties, have survived sur-vived the difficulties, trials and persecutions persecu-tions that have crossed her path during the past nineteen centuries. It can be applied to her as it was by Christ to himseif, that she "is the stone which the builders rejected, the same is become be-come the head of the corner." The cornerstone cor-nerstone of the spiritual edifice extend, ing throughout this world is Christ, and the ceremony of the 22nd proclaims pro-claims that gre;;t truth. |
