Show SACRED HEART ACADEMY. (Special Correspondence.) Old Herodotus himself would. have cast an approving smile on the pupils of Sacred Heart last week if he could have heard in the realms of shade the very satisfactory examinations in that branch of study which he is said to protect. The ever-sprightly first preparatory pre-paratory class led off with an animated competition in United States history, the battle-ground covered being that of the ejvil war. Grant and, Lee, as personated by Misses E. Campbell and G. McNulty, were indeed able leaders, but contrary to historical records it was' difficult to determine which one laid down arms at Appomattox court house. Indeed, it is hinted neither one eeasd hostilities. The soldiers seemed filled with the same - patriotic spirit that inspired the leaders. The competition competi-tion was pronounced by all who attended at-tended a decided success. Wednesday morning the third seniors thought it their tuni to review the pages of history, which they did by discussing the respective merits of Solon and Lycurgus as law-givers. Though it was their first attempt at debate in regular form, they argued in a most logical manner, giving promise of many interesting discussions in future fu-ture years: The undergraduates have so completely com-pletely covered themselves with glory by the publication of their Longfellow booklet that they need no further words of commendation, so profuse have been the congratulatory and encouraging en-couraging missives they received from appreciative friends. Yet last Wednesday Wednes-day afternoon they gave evidence that all their time, is not spent on Parnassus, Parnas-sus, for during a two hours' examination examina-tion in French history, they displayed a thorough knowledge of the subject, all the interesting points, now so discussed dis-cussed being prominently mentioned. Beginning: with the reign of Louis NIV they surveyed the country during the period of revolution, and repose; the Dreyfus case, the present situation, with its attendant atrocities coming in for a share. Special attention was attached at-tached to the evil results of immoral ! atheistic literature. A general air of expectancy hovers around the academy. One question voices the situation, and it is heard on all sides: "Oh, when will Father Cushtiahan Cush-tiahan be home?" |
