It seems incredible that in this blessed land of America, where all enjoy suffrage, and universal education, and the light of the gospel that anarchy could or would proclaim its evil' tendencies, and that in one of the most favored parts of our country, coun-try, where all can obtain work and remunerative compensation. . Is liberty a ,sham ? We cannot blink. the question. The cause of labor, which has been on the ascendancy, will receive a greater setback set-back when its own members are arrayed against each other, than in all its contests against capital. A walking delegate enters the premises of a man and shoots him in cold blood, because he serve food to a workman. There must be some evil germs in our social and industrial life, otherwise such thing could not happen. Where are we to look for these evil germs? In Mammon worship. For the gospel of love, peace and contentment we get as a substitute that of hatred, war, and discontent. dis-content. Liberty means death when anarchy proclaims pro-claims its right to rule. The melancholy fate, of John F. Silva is only one incident when and where law and order are set at nought, there should be no compromise. All loyal, patriotic. aud liberty-loving citizens should unite- and crush' the anarchical hydra. |
