Navy Re- j cruiting Station at Salt Lake City: The United States naval academy I was. founded in 1845, due to the efforts ef-forts of the historian, George Ban- j croft, who was then secretary of the navy. It was located at Fort Severn, Annapolis, which fort was transferred from the war department to the navy department. During the Civil war, the naval academy was transferred from. Anna-polis Anna-polis to Newport. The midshipmen! lived at the old Atlantic house and were drilled at Fort Adams and on the famous frigate Constitution, (Old Ironsides), which was then at Newport. New-port. The students of the United States naval academy are called midshipmen. Originally midshipmen were men who were stationed in the middle of the vessel, where they relayed messages from the quarterdeck to the forecastle. At present, each senator and representative rep-resentative in congress is allowed five j midshipmen. Candidates are required to be unmarried male citizens of the United States and must be not less than 16 or more than 20 years of age on April 1st of the year in which they enter the naval academy. Two exanrnations for admission to the naval academy are held each year under the supervision of the civil service, ser-vice, commission. One is held in February Febru-ary and the other in April. Law authorizes the appointment to the naval academy of 100 enlisted1 men each year from the regular navy or marine corps. There men are selected select-ed as the result of competitive examinations. exam-inations. Sophomores at the naval academy are culled "youngsters"; at West Poii.t they are known as "yearlings." Each year, during June, July and August, midshipmen make a practice prac-tice cruise on board battleships in order or-der to gain practical knowledge in navigation, seamanship, engineering, I gunnery and other naval subjects, i During the summer of 1934 the mid-' mid-' shipmen will cruise on the U. S. S. Arkansas and the U. S. S. Wyoming. A tentative schedule provides for i those vessels to visit Plymouth, England; Eng-land; Villefranche, France; Naples, i Italy, and Gibraltar.
