Men under j 21 years of age are not accepted for enlistment without the consent" of their parents or guardians. Men enlisted in the United States navy through the Salt Lake district are sent to the naval training station at San Diego, Calif., for a three-month three-month period of training. After their training, they are granted 10 days' leave to visit their homes and are I then assigned to a ship. ! NAUTICAL :- :- I -: -: NOVELTIES I ' j The following "Nautical Novelties" are furnished by the U. S. Navy Recruiting Re-cruiting Station at Salt Lake City: The battleship U. S. S. New York is known throughout the navy as the "Christmas Ship." On Christmas day, 1917, the New York originated the custom of having a Christmas party aboard ship for families of the crew and orphans and poor children of the port toeing visited. This custom is now being observed by every ship in the United States navy, whether at home or in foreign port. No government funds are used, the money being obtained ob-tained bv contributions of the officers i for New Years. This is exclusive of J the regular 30-day leave to which they ; are entitled each year. The following is a Christmas day and New Year day menu used throughout the United States navy: Oyster cocktail, consomme soup, combination com-bination salad, roast young torn turkey, tur-key, oyster dressing, mashed potatoes, pota-toes, candied yams, giblet gravy, asparagus as-paragus tips, celery hearts, cranberry sauce, mixed pickles, olives, mixed nuts, mixed candy, pie, cake, ice cream, coffee, cigars and cigarettes. Enlistments in the United States navy are now open to white unmarried men of American citizenship between the ages of 17 and 25 years who are mentally alert, thoroughly sound physically, phy-sically, and of good morals. Men must and crew and profits from the ship's store and ship's service store. A large Christmas tree and all the presents are placed on the quarterdeck. Bright lights deoorate the gangways and small trees are placed on the yard-arms yard-arms and flagstaffs. All divisions aboard ship decorate their respective parts of the ship and prizes are awarded for the best display. The children are given a fine dinner (consisting (con-sisting of turkey and all the trimmings) trim-mings) after which they are presented present-ed with clothing, candy, fru'ts, games and other gifts. Shows and band concerts con-certs are held and the children are escorted throughout the entire ship. It is believed that the United States navy is the only military organization in the world to give such a thorough celebration for the needy. To view the happy faces of the little visitors is the sailors' reward for time and money well spent. Sailors of the United States navy are granted special holiday leave during dur-ing the holidays. Usually one-half of the crew is granted 5 days leave for Christmas and the other half 5 days |
