Show Contractors Get Start On Project J The $46,000 state highwa project, covering a distance of slightly more than eight miles between Gunnison and north of Payette, has been start-, start-, ed, and Thomas E. Lamph, associat-I associat-I ed with L. A. Young company of j Richfield, successful bidders for the contract, states that with decent wea-ther, wea-ther, the job will be put over in the shortest time possible. The highway between Gunnison and Payette will have a marked and bene- i'icial change, according to the sur-i sur-i veys. Some few weeks ago Hal Kerr, 1 right-of-way man for the state road j commission, completed a deal whereby where-by property at the north of town was obtained from James Bown, and the highway is to course north at i the intersection of the roads, instead of running to the west. This, it was announced, is being done to eliminate elimin-ate the curve and grades on the old route. The new surveys carry the road to a point direct north from the intersection, inter-section, and then courses west, making mak-ing a connection with the old road. Through this set-pp, the distance between be-tween Gunnison and Payette will be lessened somewhat. Workmen are now making a standard highway all the way from Fayette to Gunnison. The old highway is being widened from 18, to 26 feet, and is being covered cover-ed with a 14-inch coat of gravel. When the connecting line is completed complet-ed the entire distance will conform to the new plans. If weather conditions condi-tions are favorable the new projects will be completed this winter and the next year the entire distance will be oiled. Jay Raleigh, Salt Lake, is the resident engineer, and he has four assistants on the job. Les Cox, superintendent for the Young company, told a News reporter that as soon as practical a crew of forty men would be at work on the road improvement. The work is being be-ing given out under the National Emergency Relief administration, with offices at Richfield. While the workers must register at Ricrfield, none but residents of Sanpete county will be eligible to work on the road building job. Wages for common labor la-bor has been set at 55 cents per hour, with what is known as intermdiate labor at 65 cents per hour, while skilled skill-ed workers will receive from 65 to 90 cents per hour. |
