Show Christmas Turkeys Go To New Yorkers Last large shipments of turkeys by the Southern Utah Turkey Growers from the flocks of Sanpete and Piute I counties, and comprising four car-j car-j loads, were sent out last week, be-, be-, ing consigned to the G. N. Savage : company, New York City. Generally i speaking, the consignment comprised prime birds, and all will furnish many families of metropolitan New York : with delicious turkey dinners. Never I in the history of this particular dis-i dis-i trict has so many fancy turkeys been j shipped, and buyers from other points ! have tried vainly to get some of the j choice birds. Out of the eighteen carloads, car-loads, however, all but about five carloads car-loads were handled by the Southern , Utah Turkey Growers. i The turkeys sent out last week went on consignment to the New York firm, but each shipper receives an advance payment of 20 cents per pound Prices are slightly better for the Christmas and New Years de- I mand, than compared with that of Thanksgiving, when the growers received re-ceived about an average of 20 cents per pound, f. o. b shipping point, with cash payments. The success of the turkey industry in Sanpete county this year has exceeded ex-ceeded that of all other years, and has proven the business to be extremely ex-tremely profitable to those who have entered the business. Experiences of last year, coupled with that of this year, have taught novices in the business busi-ness that care and attention, proper feeding and protection, bring (the highest results. Through the marketing market-ing plan as set up by officers and growers of the local association, the best prices have been obtained, and there is a surety that the industry is now firmly established and later years will see those now engaged entering en-tering on a larger scale, and new growers entering the field. The past season has been ideal for the growing grow-ing of turkeys in the valleys, and with the bringing of thousands to maturity ma-turity and in prime conditions, has resulted in enriching the growers to I a satisfactory extent. |
