Navy Re-1 cruiting Station at Salt Lake City: jj The average depth of the ocean be-: low sea level is said to be 12,500 feet. The deepest place in the ocean yet found is the Mindinao Deep, between the Philippine Islands and Japan, where soundings of 34,410 feet have been recorded. The greatest depth in the Atlantic ocean is near Porto Rico, 27,872 feet. ' The floating dry-dock, Dewey, was towed from the Chesapeake bay to the Philippine Islands, a distance of 13,080 miles, in 150 days and 9 hours. A dishonorable, bad conduct or un-. desirable discharge from the navy bars a man from pension, from any benefit of the veterans' bureau and from any civil service position under the federal government. It may also bar a man from employment in most of the . state or city governments and from some civilian firms. It . also de-Drives de-Drives him of the right to vote or hold office in many states. Typhoid prophylaxis is given all hands in the navy every four years until the age of 45 years. It consists of three injections in the arm, usually about ten days apart. This prophylaxis prophy-laxis treatment has practically wiped out ail typhoidever in the navy. This disease used to be the most frequent and most deadly disease the navy had to contend with. Since this prophylaxis prophy-laxis treatment has been made compulsory com-pulsory there have been but few cases j of typhoid developed in the navy, and ', most of these were of a very minor nature. The U. S. navy has a ship 135 years old still in commission. The U. S. S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), launched launch-ed at the Boston navy yard on October Octo-ber 21, 1797, and recently rebuilt,' is now cruising between ports of the United States. During the war the U. S. S. Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania won the baseball champion-1 ship of the Atlantic fleet. This was not much of a surprise, as practically the entire Boston Red Sox team, intact, in-tact, was wearing the uniform of the ship. The bureau of navigation, navy department, de-partment, recently received a request for information regarding the number of men by the name of "Smith" that served in the navy and marine corps during the world war. It has been ascertained as-certained that there were 50,328 "Smiths" in the United States army during the , world war, and 6,849 "Smiths" in - the navy and mari7ie corps during the same period. George Bancroft, motion picture actor, served with Dewey's fleet at the battle of Manila bay. While in the navy he wa rated among top-notch-' ers pf the salt water pugilists. It is more difficult to. enlist in the U. S. navy than it is to enroll in many of our leading universities. |
