Show I ! Fight On Hoppers Vigorously Pushed The vigorous campaign being waged wag-ed against the grasshopper pest, which has threatened devastation to crops in the vicinity of Fayette, Ax-tell, Ax-tell, Mayf ield and other sections of Sanpete and Sevier counties, is attaining at-taining results, according to Clinton Kjar, district agriculture inspector, who is supervising the poisoning campaign. The conditions, however, Inspector Kjar stated, are not yet mastered and it will require a continued con-tinued fight to overcome the crop destroyers. Sections around Fayette, it is reported, are the most badly infected in-fected with the grasshoppers. Millions Mil-lions of the insects have hatched a -id are just at the age of flying, while thousands are yet to be hatched. Inspector Kjar is being encouraged in the fight against the destruci ve grasshoppers by the cooperation of the landowners, and only through this method will the threatened plague be checked. Some 3,000 pounds of poisoned bran has already been scattered in the infected parts in and around Fayette with telling results, as the breeding places show the ground literally covered with dead grasshoppers. The fight must be continued, according to Mr. Kjar, as the breeding time has not yet passed. In the Mayfield, Axtell and North Sanpete sections, the conditions ara reported not so bad as at Fayette, but poison is being distributed and the insects are being killed. Both Sanpete county and state officials of-ficials are cooperating in checking the spread of . the pests. The poison is furnished the landowners free of cost, but the bran must be supplied by the farmers whose land is infected. infect-ed. Mr. Kjar supervises the mixing and directs the distribution. Mr. Kjar stated, too, that Friday a vigorous campaign will be started in the eradication of all noxious weeds. Cooperation will be asked from ;0' in putting forth a campaign a;.r.. nst white top, Russian thistle an! all other varieties that tend to lessen crop production. The state road commission, com-mission, the county commissioners and every interested farmer will bo asked to clear the roadside, cinch, banks and any other point where the weeds grow in the hopes of eventually eventual-ly killing all weeds that are destructive destruc-tive and detrimental to successful crop growing. |
