Show Local Fishermen Lured to Streams Southern Utah streams and lakes proved an enticing mecca for Gunnison Gun-nison fish fans Monday, the opening day for the fishing season for 1931. Sunday morning until dusk parties were busy preparing for the opening day and a constant line of autos carried car-ried fishermen to their favorite streams and lakes, until Gunnison was practically deserted. Fishlake, Twelve-Mile canyon, Salina canyon and points as far south as Panguitch lakes and streams nearby, were the principal points of attraction for the local nimrods. And all were not unlucky. It was a rare story for a fisherman to return re-turn and report "no luck." On the other hand, "fly casters" and "worm-ers" "worm-ers" returned with the limit. The low waters in the creeks and larger streams proved the alluring places and experts with the fly had little J trouble in getting the festive trout to nibble the bait Twelve-Mile drew a big crowd and for half a day the trout were active and many limits were reported from that place. The various streams in Salina canyon, too, offered good fishing and big catches. FisMake, as usual, drew many from here and those who carried a "lucky" piece had little trouble in bagging the limit in a few hours. Fishermen who motored to Fishlake report one of the largest crowds seen there on the opening day for many years. And the day was ideal. A warm, balmy sun, with just enough breeze to create the proper riffle, made both casting and trolling ideal. Until noon, brook, rainbow, rain-bow, salmon and mackinaw were working fine and it required little effort to bag the limit. While many limits were reported, expert fishermen reported that the streams in the immediate vicinity of Gunnison were not overstocked, and that it would only be a ' matter of a few weeks, if strenuous fishing was followed, until the legal sized fish will have been exhausted. With this view in mind plans are already being made to insist on the state fish and game commission to plant sufficient fish to keep the streams always ready for the Isaac Waltons. |
