Show GUNS AND GROCERIES. It has been found in Washington, D. C, that many thousands of pistols and revolvers are possessed by local residents although only a very few private citizens are licensed to have them. One newspaper states that firearms fire-arms are about as easy to buy as groceries. Here, in a nut-shell, is one of the strongest arguments against legislation legisla-tion arbitrarily restrictive of such personal rights and liberties as owning own-ing a gun. Such laws, going against the grain of free people accustomed . to having guns for either protection or sport, are unenforceable and help breed a contempt for all law. They make technical law-breakers out of otherwise good citizens. , A feasible gun law is one making it illegal for a person wdth a criminal crim-inal record to possess a weapon, and increasing the penalty for crimes committed com-mitted with the aid of firearms. Such a law discourages the packing of deadly weapons and at the same time protects the constitutional rights of citizens. |
