Show Good Clean Straw Has Food Values Good clean straw has considerable feed value, according to J. C. Hogen-son, Hogen-son, extention agronomist, Utah State Agriculture college. It is recommended recommend-ed that as) much of the straw as possible pos-sible be well stacked at the time of threshing so that it will not waste. In some sections of the state a simple method cf stacking straw is used. Posts are placed in a circle just the size of the proposed stack. Woven Wo-ven wire, 6 feet high, is placed on the inside of these posts. The thresher Vs placed so that the blower deposits the striw and chaff in the center of the enclosure. One man, only is needed need-ed to move the straw from the center cen-ter to the outside. To make a good straw stack without with-out the wire, a man and a boy should spend their entire time in the stack at the time of threshing to see that the sides are built straight and that the center be kept filled all the time. Straw stacks should be topped off similar to a hay stack. If the top of the stack can be covered either with wild hay or course straw, a rounding top will be all that will be necessary to keep the straw in good condition. Whether it will pay to rake up the straw from a field which has been harvested with a combine will depend de-pend entirely upon how urgently the straw will be needed by the owner. Whether the cost of raking,, .hauling and stacking the straw will be more than the value of the straw to his farm annuals, must be worked out and decided upon by the individual farmer who owns the straw and the animals to be fed. |
